UCC-APC Statement on recent events in Alberta

EDMONTON – The Ukrainian community in Alberta is saddened and distraught by the recent increase of vandalism, attacks on individuals and community centres in Alberta. Among the churches defaced and damaged was the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Calgary.

As has been stated by National Chief Perry Bellegarde, the destruction of property will not help to build relationships between communities. Churches are places of worship where people gather to pray and to reflect. For their parishioners, they are places of peace and spiritual unity. To desecrate these places is unacceptable and has no place in Alberta or Canada.

The UCC-APC calls on law enforcement agencies to fully investigate these attacks.
