DAY 10: The Lethbridge Internment Camp was the longest-open internment camp in Alberta. It operated for 769 days, from September 30, 1914, to November 7, 1916. It was located at the Lethbridge Exhibition Grounds, and over the time that the camp was open, it received many mixed reports about the conditions endured by the prisoners. However, even the good reports should not overshadow the fact that those who were interned in the camp were put there against their will and for no justifiable reason.

It is easier to understand the experiences faced by the roughly 600 prisoners at the Lethbridge camp—or the 8,579 across Canada, for that matter—through a personal story. Accompanying today’s feature video, I will discuss some of the background of the Lethbridge Internment Camp and then follow that with the story of a prisoner named William Perchaliuk, a young Ukrainian man who was interned in both Lethbridge and Banff.

Stories like William’s have been important to me, as the topic of the first Canadian internment operations was something I was largely unaware of until I got to university. This is despite the fact that I come from a Ukrainian family. The Perchaliuk story helped to give me a deeper understanding of the experiences prisoners went through as I did more and more research into the First World War internment camps. I do also feel that stories like William’s are important to all people, as they give a voice to the individuals who were interned as “enemy aliens” in the First World War. – Benjamin Weistra

DAY 11: June 11 – “Internment Literature”
