After a short career as a Edmonton city councilor, Decore was involved in the negotiations surrounding the passage of Canada's new constitution, lobbying for the addition of Section 27 to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarenteeing multiculturalism in Canadian law. He then served as mayor of Edmonton from 1983 to 1988, leader of the Alberta Liberal Party from 1988 to 1994, and leader of the Official Opposition from 1993- 1994. The lookout is one of the most scenic places in Edmonton, with a view of the Walterndale Bridge and Downtown from the south bank of the river.
