Dumy moї – My Thoughts: Taras Shevchenko’s Story of Empathy and Resistance Amid the Ongoing War in Ukraine

Curator’s Talk by
Dmytro Yesypenko, PhD Student, MLCS

March 10, 2023 | 12 PM MST
Rutherford Library Galleria, University of Alberta

Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861) is undoubtedly one of the most prominent and influential figures for Ukrainian communities around the world. This short presentation will focus on Shevchenko’s portrayal in contemporary Ukrainian visual arts and the roles assigned to the writer in the conditions of war. Dmytro’s talk will serve as an introduction to the Shevchenko digital exhibition Dumy moї–My Thoughts, which will be held by the Kule Folklore Centre in the Rutherford Library Galleria throughout March 2023.

Dmytro Yesypenko is a Ph.D. student in the Modern Languages and Cultural Studies Department and a research assistant at the Kule Centre for Ukrainian and Canadian Folklore (University of Alberta). His interests include Ukrainian historical and literary processes of the 19th-early 20th centuries and medical humanities. Dmytro’s ongoing doctoral research is focused on past epidemics as portrayed in Ukrainian and Polish literatures and folklore.
