DAY 6: Statement of Alberta Premier Jason Kenney on the 100th Anniversary of the Official End of Canada’s First Internment operations of 1914-1920

When current Alberta Premier Jason Kenney was a cabinet member of the Federal Government of Canada, he actively promoted historical recognition of Canada’s First internment operations of 1914 – 1920. On May 9, 2008, recognition and restitution were secured by the Ukrainian Canadian community when the Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity), The Honourable Jason Kenney, signed an agreement at Stanley Barracks in Toronto, establishing the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund.

In 2009, Mr. Kenney received the Taras Schevchenko Medal, the highest honour bestowed by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, in recognition of his successful efforts to memorialize Canada’s First World War Internment Operations; to achieve the Government of Canada’s recognition of the Holodomor Famine-Genocide; and to deepen appreciation for the Ukrainian community’s central role in Canadian multiculturalism.

Lorsque l’actuel premier ministre de l’Alberta Jason Kenney était membre du cabinet du gouvernement fédéral du Canada, il a activement promu la reconnaissance historique des premières opérations d’internement du Canada de 1914 à 1920. Le 9 mai 2008, la communauté ukrainienne du Canada a obtenu la reconnaissance et la restitution des biens lorsque le secrétaire d’État (Multiculturalisme et Identité canadienne), l’honorable Jason Kenney, a signé un accord à la caserne Stanley de Toronto, établissant le Fonds canadien de reconnaissance des internements de la Première Guerre mondiale.

En 2009, M. Kenney a reçu la médaille Taras Schevchenko, la plus haute distinction accordée par le Congrès ukrainien canadien, en reconnaissance de ses efforts fructueux pour commémorer les opérations d’internement du Canada pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, pour obtenir la reconnaissance par le gouvernement du Canada de l’Holodomor Famine-Génocide et pour mieux faire comprendre le rôle central de la communauté ukrainienne dans le multiculturalisme canadien.

Коли чинний прем’єр-міністр Альберти Джейсон Кенні був членом кабінету Федерального уряду Канади, він активно пропагував історичне визнання канадських перших операцій інтернування 1914 – 1920 рр. 9 травня 2008 року визнання та реституція були забезпечені українській канадській громаді, коли в казармах Стенлі в Торонто Державний секретар (мультикультуралізм та канадська ідентичність), Почесний Джейсон Кенні підписав угоду про створення Канадського фонду визнання інтерунвання у період Першої світової війни.
У 2009 році пан Кенні отримав медаль Тараса Шевченка, найвищу відзнаку, яку присуджує Конґрес українців Канади, за успішні досягнення щодо увічнення пам’яті канадських перших операцій інтернування під час Першої світової війни; за визнання урядом Канади геноциду Голодомору; та за зміцнення розуміння центральної ролі української громади в канадському мультикультуралізмі.
